Chat addons

Chat rank and format addons hide each chat message and show it again in their own style. Here's how BedrockRelay still relays it, and how to keep your addon compatible.

On a dedicated server

Once a pack cancels world.beforeEvents.chatSend, Minecraft calls no pack listed after it in the world's world_behavior_packs.json, however early that pack subscribed. So BedrockRelay installs itself at the top of that list, where it sees every message first.

  • BedrockRelay never cancels or changes chat, so your addon still gets every message.
  • From pack v0.6.1, chat your addon cancels is still relayed to Discord under the player's name, as they wrote it. That includes a player your addon has muted.
  • If your install instructions put your addon at the top of the list, say BedrockRelay goes above it, or chat stops reaching Discord.

On a Realm

BedrockRelay's Realm pack never sees chat: our bot reads it as a player. When your addon cancels a message and shows its own line, the bot reads that line and works out who said what. It recognises:

  • Minecraft's own chat format, which is best: {"translate":"chat.type.text","with":[name, message]}.
  • A player's name, then a separator and a space, then the message, with any rank or colours before it: [VIP] Steve: hi, Steve » hi, Steve | hi. The separators are : » › > | → ~ and -, up to three in a row.
  • A name in brackets, then a space: <Steve> hi, [Steve] hi, (Steve) hi.

The name must be an online player's name, as Minecraft knows it. Keep separators out of whatever comes before it: [Lvl: 5] Steve: hi isn't recognised, because Lvl: looks like someone speaking. Only what players see is relayed, so a muted player's chat stays out. If your addon's format isn't recognised, tell us what a chat line looks like on the Discord support server and we'll add it.

Chat commands

Messages starting with ! are usually commands for another addon, so they stay in the game by default. A world's owner can change that in its settings. If your addon uses another prefix, those messages reach Discord like any chat.

Posting anything else

For messages that aren't a player's chat, such as announcements, rank-ups or rewards, fire a script event instead of relying on chat. It works the same on servers and Realms, and the owner chooses which channels get it.
